Our History

Northbrook Baptist Church was established as Crossroads Baptist Mission by Boiling Springs First Baptist Church on May 3, 1959.  Facilities provided by Boiling Springs First Baptist included a concrete block store building and two four-room-houses located on one-half acre of land in the south east corner of the intersection of Boiling Springs Road and Shoally Creek Road (currently CVS). Twenty members from Boiling Springs First Baptist came as workers, including Troy W. Petty as pastor.
In 1960 and 1962, additional property on the south side of Boiling Springs Road, consisting of one and one-half acres, was purchased by Boiling Springs First Baptist for future Mission expansion. In September of 1963, a six and one-half acre tract of land with a six-room-frame-house was purchased by the mission for the future location of permanent church facilities.  The tract (our current site) was situated opposite of the original mission location in the south west corner of the intersection of Boiling Springs Road and Shoally Creek Road.  The house began to be used as the third mission annex in 1964.  The property purchased in 1960 and 1962 was sold for residential use in December of 1967. In January 1964, the mission elected a Planning and Survey Committee for the first unit.

On May 2, 1965, the sixth anniversary of the mission, Crossroads Baptist Mission was organized as Northbrook Baptist Church.  There were 109 charter members.  In June 1968, the church voted to purchase a house on Melody Lane for use as a church parsonage.  The purchase was completed in September, and the Pastor and his family moved into the house in October. The Planning and Survey Committee members were elected to serve as the Church Building Committee.  On July 22, 1968, the contract for construction of the first unit of the permanent church building was negotiated with W.M. Fine & Son, Inc.  The building was accepted from the builder on July 1, 1969.  The first unit was an educational building and also provided area for temporary worship.  The total floor space was approximately 8,000 square feet.
During the summer of 1972, the Building and Finance Committee began to meet to study plans for a second unit.  On June 24, 1973, those plans became a reality.  After the morning worship service, ground was broken for the second unit.  The unit consisted of classrooms and a temporary sanctuary with a seating capacity of 430. In 1973, Rev. Troy Petty resigned as Pastor of Northbrook Baptist Church and Rev. Paul Burnett served as Interim Pastor.  In March 1974, the first service was held in the new Sanctuary. In December 1974, Rev. Bill Adams began his ministry at Northbrook. In June of 1980, the Trilon was erected.  The Trilon was constructed of three aluminum pipes, each standing 48 feet high, with three crosses extending five feet above the tower making the total height 53 feet tall.  The structure was decided upon in lieu of a traditional steeple because of the modern architectural design of the existing buildings. In September of 1981, Rev. Bill Adams resigned.  The Rev. J.L. McCluney served as Interim Pastor until April 1982 when Rev. Dean Poteat became the Pastor.  Rev. Dean Poteat resigned in April 1984, and Rev. Wyatt Garrett served as Interim Pastor until 1985 when Rev. Ralph Brown became the Pastor. In December 2001, Rev. Ralph Brown resigned and the Lord sent Rev. James Crocker as Interim Pastor.  In October of 2002, the heating and air conditioning was upgraded, the parking lot was repaved and extended, and the Sanctuary was renovated with new pews, choir chairs, carpet, communion table, and pulpit.

In November of 2002, Dr. Wayne Dickard was called as Pastor at Northbrook. On April 27, 2003, the Northbrook family voted to contract with Roebuck Builders to build an 800 seat Sanctuary and a 30 classroom Educational Facility for a total of 24,000 square feet at a cost of $2,059,000.  Ground broke on July 6, 2003. The building project lasted for over 14 months. On September 26, 2004, the first services were held in the new building.  The dedication of the facilities was celebrated on October 10, 2004.  The Reverends Ralph Brown, Bill Adams, and James Crocker assisted Dr. Dickard with the “Dedication Celebration”. In July 2005, the church purchased a house at 102 Northbrook St and in January 2006, a second home was purchased for use in future expansions. In February 2013, the Church voted to purchase a third house on Northbrook St. In 2006, the Fellowship Hall and the kitchen were completed in the space that was formerly the sanctuary. Dr. Wayne Dickard resigned as Pastor in November of 2010.

Rev. John Lynch served as Interim Pastor until July of 2011 when Pastor Benny Green was called to serve as the current Pastor. In January 2012, Deandra Kimbrell was called to serve as the Director of Children and Youth Ministries.  Deandra served until December of 2014.  In May of 2012, Gregg Graham was called as the current Minister of Music. In April of 2015, Rev. Cory Wall was called as the current Minister of Students and Young Adults. In August of 2015, Lani Bobo was called as the Director of Children’s Ministry.  She served until August of 2018. In October of 2018, Janet Ledford was called as the current Director of Children and Family Ministries. On February 17, 2019, Northbrook opened a new 12,800 square foot Life Center.  The project also included a complete renovation of our oldest building which now houses our Student Worship Center and our Children’s Ministry Area.

Through the years, Northbrook has been blessed with dedicated members who have served and given sacrificially.   All areas of ministry continue to grow and God has blessed the fellowship with a wonderful spirit.  Northbrook continues to focus on exalting the Savior, evangelizing the lost, and encouraging the saved.  We pray that God continues to bless Northbrook in the years to come.
